Wallpaper Direct Magazine

Case Study - Updated 20th March 2011

Wallpaper Direct Magazine Brief

Parkview Publishing asked us to work with them on the first issue of Wallpaper Direct magazine. The client was Brewers, the national decorating supplies firm, who needed something extra special for the Ideal Home Show in March 2011.

Our role was to carry-out all of the design work, whilst liaising with the publisher, client, and printer.

The Project

Since this was the first issue of the magazine, there were no style guidelines or templates. Before beginning work on the magazine proper, we prepared two example articles allowing the client to get a feel for what was possible and for us to make some recommendations on style guidelines.

After the concept stage, it was clear that since wallpaper is such a visual product, the design had to focus on showing-off the photography:

  • we used big images, often across a double page spread
  • we used plenty of white space so that the photos had room to breath
  • we did not put text on top of the photography
  • we did not use half-page or quarter-page adverts or features

When the magazine was finished, it turned out there were more than 200 images in just 52 pages! Each of these had to be checked for resolution and colour space, and normalised in line with the printer’s artwork guidelines.

Chris and Christian worked on this project. Chris was responsible for all communication, collating content and feedback, and ensuring that the work was delivered to the printers on time. Christian handled the design, including some very last minute amendments!

End Result

The magazine took 5 weeks from start to finish. It was printed in time for the Ideal Home Show and we have already been asked to do the second issue!
