Search Engine Optimisation

Switchplane's content management system provides several features to help you improve your site's search engine performance. For more tips on search engine optimisation see our article on writing search engine friendly content.

Automatic Site Map

Site maps are important for search engine optimisation as they provide a link to every page on your website - this allows the search engines to find all your website's content within three hyperlinks.

Whenever you create a content page, the system automatically updates your site map.

Automatic Keyword Meta Tag

The keyword meta tag displays a list of keywords for the content page and helps the search engine to work out what the page is about.

Historically, the keyword meta tag has been the subject of abuse in order to fool the search engines into thinking that a page is relevant. Consequently, their importance is somewhat diminished, although used carefully they do help the search engine.

The content management system automatically generates the keywords based on the page's content. It works out the most important words (e.g. a big heading is more important than body text) and displays the 20 most important.

Editable Description Meta Tag

The description meta tag displays a short summary of the page's content. This helps the search engine to work out what the page is about, and is also presented in the search engine's results as the page summary:

Google's search result for the Switchplane home page
Google's search result for the Switchplane home page

You can specify the page's description when you are creating a content page or editing a content page. Try to keep the description short and accurate otherwise the search engine will think you are trying to fool it.

Editable Page Title

The page title is very important as it is the first thing that the search engine uses in order to work out what a page is about.

The page title is partially automatic. The content management system formats the title as follows: "[name of website] - [name of content category] - [page name]". For example, if your website is called "Your Site", and you have created a page called "Kitchen" in a category called "My House", then the page title would be "Your Site - My House - Kitchen".

You can specify the content page's name when you are creating a content page or editing a content page. You can specify the content category's name when you are creating a content category or editing a content category.
