What is a Product Category?

A product category is a section of the catalogue for grouping related products, for example action films, kids t-shirts etc. Product categories are essential for keeping your product catalogue organised and easy for your customers to use.

Product categories are hierarchical - each product category can contain further product categories. For example, you could create a product category called "Film", which contains "Action", "Comedy" and "Romance" categories. The "Comedy" category could then contain "Slapstick", "Black Comedy", and "Spoof" categories.

Customers navigate to product categories by searching the website, following links from the top of the product category page, following breadcrumbs, or using the product category navigation tree. This is usually shown automatically in the navigation for your site but you can display it as part of any content by using the <NAVTREE> SML tag.

When a customer is browsing the product catalogue, the product category names are used to generate the breadcrumbs. For example, if your customer was viewing the "Spoof" category from the earlier example, the breadcrumbs would be shown as "Home - Products - Films - Comedy - Spoof", with each breadcrumb linking to the relevant area of the site.
