What is the Product Category Tree?

The product category tree allows the user to browse the product catalogue. It shows the current product category that is being browsed by the user as well as those on an equal or higher level or within the current product category.

Although the layout of the product category tree is usually modified to fit the style of each website, they all have the same functionality:

  • each category name shown is a hyperlink allowing the user to navigate to that category;
  • the current category and its parent categories are shown in bold;
  • categories are displayed alphabetically;
  • hovering the mouse pointer over a category name will display a tooltip with the category's description.

How is the current product category determined?

The current product category is updated when:

  • the user views a product category; or
  • the user views a product - the product category which contains the product becomes the current product category.
