Usable Websites
Websites with good usability generate more business
The research and investigation of how people behave online shows that highly usable websites generate more business for their owners. Switchplane concentrates on designing highly usable websites which solve your customers' problems.
What is usability?
In the context of web design, usability is a measure of how easy it is to interact with your website.
How does good usability generate more business?
Imagine that someone comes onto your website:
- What happens if they can't find the product they want, even though you sell it?
- What happens if they can't read your text because it’s too small?
- What happens if it takes ages to load one of your pages?
- What happens if the user has to sit through a 30-second flash animation before they can do anything?
They leave, and buy from your competitors instead!
What is good usability?
Some basic rules:
- Lots of information
- Easy to find information
- Fast to load pages
- Don't annoy the user
How does Switchplane approach usability?
We follow the basic rules (see above). It is easy to follow rules 1-3, but rule 4 is a bit more complex and needs continual study to remain up-to-date with the latest research on user behaviour.
Some examples of how usability affects our web design:
| Usability Fact |
Action |
| Long downloads annoy users |
We optimise image size and quality for high resolution but fast download |
| Users ignore anything that looks like an advert |
We don't use flashy designs so users read all of your message |
| Users automatically distrust websites |
We don't use inappropriate stock photography
We do concentrate on credibility and integrity |
