Annie Hill Website Design

Case Study - Updated 6th June 2011

We recently designed a website for Annie Hill, an interior designer. It is simple and elegant, and is a very good example of what you can expect from our web design service.

Explore the graphic below to find out more about some of the techniques we use to make our websites extra special!

Favicon - Helps users find your site in their browser history

Favicon

Favicon is a merging of "favourite" with "icon". Favicons are displayed in several places in modern browsers: in the address bar before the URL, in the tab next to the title of the page, and next to the website’s entry in your browser’s history and bookmarks.

The purpose of the Favicon is to help your website to be easier to find when scanning through a list of pages and tabs.

Friendly URL - Helps users to understand what they will find on your page

Friendly URL

A friendly URL is one that is easy to read for both users and search engines. Friendly URLs have a positive effect on your search engine ranking and make it easier for users to type.

Search engine friendly graphics

Search Engine Friendly

Humans love graphics, search engines love text. We use techniques to ensure that search engines see important text, whilst humans get to see great looking design.

Navigation pointer - Helps the user know where they are

Navigation Pointer

The navigation pointer is used to highlight which area of the website the user is currently viewing. Users want to know where they are, where they’ve been, and where they can go, and so the navigation pointer makes the website easier to use.

We don’t always use a pointer, it could be a change of background or some other aesthetic technique, but the end result is the same.

Sliced imagery - Adds interest to the image

Sliced Image

This is a design technique to add interest to the imagery. It’s not always appropriate but as the client is an interior designer, we felt it added to the overall look and feel of the design as well as looking nice.

Graceful fonts - Making your page readable by everyone

Graceful Fonts

Graceful fonts mean that we specify a nice modern font as the default, but also provide for a backup font in case the default one is not installed. This means that we can have really nice looking text for modern browsers but the website will still look acceptable in older browsers.

Shadow effect - Lifts the content from the background

Drop Shadow

Drop shadow is a design technique which lifts the page content from the background. This provides a better-looking transition between the content and the background, and makes it easier for the eye to differentiate between the two. This makes the website easier to use, as well as looking better.

Automatic copyright notice - Keeps your site looking current

Automatic Copyright Notice

We automatically keep the copyright notice up-to-date on all our websites. While you’re busy sipping champagne at midnight on New Year’s Eve, the copyright notice will increment itself ensuring that your website looks up-to-date. It also gives Google another reason to rank you higher.
