Grassroots Suicide Prevention launches new StayAlive app

Grassroots Suicide Prevention has just launched an updated version of the StayAlive app on iOS and Android, and a new companion website application is now available for users. Switchplane has made the iOS, Android, and Web versions of the app work seamlessly together to enable StayAlive users to access this vital resource and their personalised tools from any device.

Having received new funding from the Department of Health, Grassroots have been working with Switchplane over the past year to refresh the StayAlive app that was originally launched in 2014.

The StayAlive app is packed full of useful information and tools to help users stay safe in crisis. As well as the numerous national and local resources available, the app includes customisable elements including a Safety Plan, Wellness Plan, Reasons for Living, and a LifeBox, where users can store important photo, video and audio memories. There are also strategies for staying safe, staying grounded, and exercises to help with guided breathing. Feedback from app users has been consistently positive over the years; people have used it when in crisis and say it is literally life-saving.

The updated applications benefit from a new piece of technology, Flutter, which enables much of the codebase to be shared between the iOS and Android platforms with only minimal operating system-specific code required. This technology has dramatically brought down the cost in app development as so much of the code can be reused, rather than writing whole apps individually for iOS or Android.

The popular features from the old app still remain, but with a refreshed look and feel as well as some important new functionality; iOS users will particularly notice the difference in the appearance of the app.

The updates include:

  • Ability to create an account to allow users to sync their data between devices, if desired.
  • Ability to retain the existing user experience of having no account, so that all data remains purely on the app.
  • Updated customisable Safety Plan and Wellness Plan, accessible from the web-based version, and ability for users download their plans to share with medical professionals.
  • Updated LifeBox, allowing users to add in photos as before, but also audio and video clips.
  • Updated contact functionality, so users can create links to their primary contacts in their address books to have easy access in case of crisis.
  • Improved ‘Find Help Now’ feature, which allows users to navigate to the resources closest to them. This feature is now also available on the web-based version of the application, meaning it will be accessible by a far wider audience.

Grassroots has recently secured further funding from the National Lottery’s Digital Fund to ensure the app continues to improve in response to the needs of users over the next four years. These latest updates are an important step forward in Grassroots’ journey and Switchplane looks forward to progressing the app further with the charity and its users.

You can find StayAlive in the iOS App Store, on Google Play, or via the website:

"We love working with charities who want to invest in digital, so we're really pleased to be able to support Grassroots in bringing this refreshed suicide prevention tool to a wider audience."

“We’re really excited to be launching this upgrade of StayAlive. We know the app has already had a real, life-saving impact for many people, and hope the new features will increase its power to help those at risk of suicide, and those who want to support them.”
