Illustrating Fire Doors: When a picture can speak a 1000 words

Woodbase Joiners are already well known locally in Sussex for their bespoke and outstanding joinery services. They’ve recently added fire doors to their ever-growing portfolio of products.

Creating a technical illustration is a great way to show both individual elements of a product as well as a general overview

Fire doors have an array of features and benefits that can often be overlooked in a photo. So with this in mind Woodbase commissioned us to draw a simple illustration to highlight some of the chief benefits, in a simple user-friendly illustration.

Creating a technical illustration is a great way to show both individual elements of a product as well as a general overview. The main benefits are that you can simplify an image and focus on select areas and you can omit unnecessary detail. Furthermore, illustrations often don’t need translation and can be great for use in manuals as well.

For this illustration Woodbase wanted us to highlight all the safety features that might otherwise be overlooked using simple annotation. This included the door frame construction, hinges, safety glass, security and intumescent smoke strip. We spent two hours drawing this fairly simple illustration and coloured it to match Woodbase’s brand. It gives a great simple overview of how fire doors work.
